Shaking Things Up: Earthquakes and What They Mean for New Jersey

You probably remember where you were on April 5, 2024 when much of New Jersey felt a 4.8 magnitude earthquake Did you know that the state has experienced over 200 smaller quakes since then?

Wondering what you should know about these earth-shaking events?

Join us at the Library for a talk by TCNJ professor Shannon Graham!  A specialist in geophysics,  she’ll be covering:

  • What causes earthquakes?
  • Why do they happen in New Jersey?
  • Can we predict them?
  • What is currently being done to study them?
  • And what should I do if I experience one?

Her presentation will answer all of these questions, along with any others you may have related to earthquakes and their hazards!

Shannon Graham, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at The College of New Jersey.  She is passionate about understanding how the earth works, and strives to make meaningful contributions not only scientifically, but in ways that can also be used to determine hazards for local communities.
